Subliminal Messages

چکیده

In the fall of 1982 we were contacted by a local radio announcer for information about a phenomenon he referred to as “backmasking.” However, his question did not concern the well-studied phenomenon of visual persistence (see DiLollo, 1980; Sakitt, 1976); the announcer wanted to know what were the effects on a listener of messages that allegedly had been recorded backward into popular rock music. He informed us that when such recordings are played in the normal, forward fashion, the messages are not consciously perceived; however, played backward, intelligible messages can be heard. His concern was not that listeners would play their records backward and thereby “hear” the messages but rather that the messages would be perceived unconsciously by the listener when the recording was played forward. He informed us that those who advanced this belief also claimed that the messages had an evil content and that, upon hearing them, the youthful listener was led down a path of loose morality and behavioral aberration. Depending upon the degree of religious belief held by the proponents of these views, the backward messages are, at the least, thought to have been technologically engineered by the rock groups themselves or, at the worst, inserted by Satan.

Running head: ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF AUDIO AND VISUAL SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES ON BRAND CHOICE 1 Assessing the Effects of Audio and Visual Subliminal Messages on Brand Choice

The purpose of the experiment was to determine if audio or visual subliminal messages had an effect on the choice of a brand of gum. Subjects were presented either an audio or video stimulus that either contained a subliminal message or no subliminal message and then were given the choice of three fake brands of gum. Participants, all of which were high school students, were not told they were ...

Is there an effect of subliminal messages in music on choice behavior?

The present study examines the effects of subliminal text messages in music on choice behavior. Subliminal messages are assumed to function as auditory primers. The results of two experiments will be presented: In Experiment 1, the authors tried to manipulate choice behavior of adult students (N = 66; age: 19-30 years) using subliminally presented words in two pop music pieces. In two blinded, ...

A digital signature with multiple subliminal channels and its applications

In this paper, we present two schemes for embedding multiple subliminal messages into one-time signature schemes (OTSSs) proposed by Lamport (1971, 1981) [35,36]. Our schemes have the advantage that the subliminal receivers cannot forge a valid signature since they do not share the signer’s secret key. Our schemes can also providemore than one independent subliminal message, and the numbers of ...

Subliminal messages for increasing self-esteem: placebo effect.

Although experimental research has confirmed the capacity of the human cognitive system to process information that does not reach consciousness (unconscious perception), empirical evidence of the incidence of subliminal verbal messages included on audiotapes claiming to improve human resources and correct some behavioral problems is meager and inconsistent. Our study assesses the influence of ...

On the Channel Capacity of Narrow-Band Subliminal Channels

Subliminal channels, discovered by Simmons, yield a possibility to transmit covert messages by embedding them in cryptographic digital data, such as (EC)DSA signatures. The embedded messages are used for transmitting important information, or as watermarks or imprints of the data. Anyone can use or abuse these channels very easily because most cryptographic digital data widely used in the Inter...
